Holiday Activities Fund (HAF) in South Tees – Management and Co-ordination

School holidays can be particular pressure points for some families because of increased costs (such as food and childcare) and reduced incomes. For some children that can lead to a holiday experience gap – with children from disadvantaged families less likely to access organised out-of-school activities; more likely to experience ‘unhealthy holidays’ in terms of nutrition and physical health and are more likely to experience social isolation.

Free holiday clubs are a response to this issue and evidence suggests that they can have a positive impact on children and young people. It also shows they work best when they provide consistent and easily accessible enrichment activities, when they offer more than just breakfast or lunch, and when they involve children (and parents) in food preparation.

On 8 November 2020, the Government announced that the Holiday Activities and Food programme, which has provided healthy food and enriching activities to disadvantaged children since 2018, will be expanded across the whole of England in 2021.

The programme covers the Easter, summer and Christmas holidays in 2021, and up to £220m is being made available to Local Authorities for the programme. It will be available to eligible children and young person (school age in receipt of free school meals related benefits) in every Local Authority in England and will build on the success of the local holiday programmes that the Government have been funding since 2018.

From this funding, Middlesbrough Council have been awarded £1,047,470 and Redcar & Cleveland £695,950. From this, we can utilise up to 10% for the Management and Co-ordination of the HAF in South Tees.

We are inviting partners interested in fulfilling this function (specifically the management and co-ordination of the HAF in South Tees – NOT the front line delivery) to an (online) information and collaboration session on Thursday 15th April between 11:30 and 13:00 – to register your interest, please email scott_lloyd@middlesbrough.gov.uk

The tender will go live shortly after this date; we anticipate the value to be between £120,000 and £140,000 and that the contract will run from sometime in May until 31st December 2021.

Funding opportunities to provide the front line delivery of the HAF at summer and Christmas will be communicated in the near future.
