The Prevent duty is about safeguarding people who may be drawn into terrorism or extremist activity, and helping them get support early. This free online training from the Home Office explains what Prevent means in practice and what to do if you are worried about someone.
It is written for staff and volunteers in the sectors covered by the Prevent duty — including education, health, local authorities and the voluntary and community sector — and anyone else is welcome to take it.
The service has four self-paced courses, taken in order:
- Awareness — the starting point (about 30–40 minutes): what Prevent is, the risks to look out for, and the “notice, check, share” approach.
- Referrals — for designated safeguarding leads and anyone who may make a Prevent referral.
- Channel / PMAP — for people who chair or sit on a multi-agency support panel.
- Refresher — a short annual reminder of the main points.
Most people in a community organisation only need the Awareness course. You can start straight away and use your reference number to pick up where you left off. Completing the training is not a legal requirement, but your organisation may ask you to do it.
