Some of the tasks involved may include:
- Booking out equipment, dealing with customer enquiries, sales and giving information.
- Ensure customers are fully trained in the safe use of the hired equipment.
- Undertake general administrative duties, or supporting at events.
Desirable Skills/Experience – but full training will be given!
- Experience in a customer service role
- Experience of computer use
- Previous experience of volunteering.
- Some awareness of disabilities
2 hours a fortnight minimum

Surviving or Thriving Survey 2016

Around 100 Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) organisations working across the North East took part in our survey. Between them they supported over 180,000 individuals in the North East, and almost 7,000 organisations. They employ over 2,480 people and rally just under 3,000 volunteers. the majority of respondents fell into the small and medium sized organisation category.
Headline figures
The results are in on our 8th annual sector survey’ Surviving or Thriving’ and the most significant factor in this year’s survey is no surprise- increased demand for services alongside increases in the number of people organisations are supporting. A significant 72% have had an increase in the numbers of beneficiaries, and 85% have had increased demand. However, the increase in demand and beneficiaries isn’t matched by a significant increase in income, nor is it matched by a corresponding increase in human resources.
There has been a steady rise in the numbers reporting a decrease in funding over the years which remains consistently high. However, the sector continues to adapt to survive with a marked change in income mix reported this year. 46% have their grant income decrease but 44% have seen their earned income increase. Local authorities continue to provide a significant source of income for the sector through the form of grants, with 77% of recipients receiving grants.
The patterns over the last few years illustrate an increasing reliance on reserves, loss of substantial funding, and a number of organisations shrinking. Organisations are facing significant continued rising demand, but with public sector spending cuts and dependency on reserves, they are now in a fragile state to respond appropriately.
Survey Reports & Infrastructure Review/Discussions
A Summary analysis of the Chief Officer LDA Survey & the LIPS survey is finally completed and will distributed at the LDA meeting 24th Cotuit is also being distributed to the NE Funders Network and IPPR North.
Better Health Programme
The vast majority of the NHS Better Health Programme 100 VCSE conversations have been completed- report underway by VONNE.
Timeframe for formal consultation has slipped due to local government elections and Purdah next year so formal consultation on final options won’t be till June 17 and then there will be a 10-12 week consultation process so any significant changes are at least a year away.
JH continues to attend the BHP Programme Board and Not in Hospital Working Group (Steve also a member). However the BHP Board is in transition to becoming the Sustainability & Transformation Board and the governance framework is being discussed at length with numerous sub groups and stakeholder forums being proposed. The point has been made about the sector being repressed at all levels in spirit of co-design and co-production. At the moment JH still attending but the proposed structure does not include VCSE at Board level.

VONNE
Membership Plus launch – Membership Plus is being launched in November.
There will always be a free basic membership for organisations recognising that smaller organisations do not have resources to pay for membership and basic membership will continue to cover things such as the e bulletin, annual review, directory, and voting rights as a member organisation. Membership plus is an optional additional package which will provide various additional benefits to the basic membership. VONNE is going to introduce three levels of membership plus – Bronze, Silver and Gold.
Natalie Maidment our Criminal Justice Local Development Officer – North East working with Clinks is now on maternity leave so Abi Lunn is covering her work 3 days a week with additional strategic input from Clinks.
Office of Civil Society
Since the loss of a dedicated NE Regional Officer ( Ian Dodd’s) we have been working with Paul Schofield and have agreed that VONNE will support information flows to OCS on key things going on in the NE, further disseminate information from OSC and provide support to some of the work that Ian was engaged in such as the Employee Volunteering/skills sharing agenda.
NE Funders Network
NE Funders Network – there has been some sub group work targeting cold spots for funding in the region, one in Tees Valley being Redcar as Lloyds Bank Foundation are seeking to invest in the area. The Funders Network now have the LIO report which should support better sharing of information between LDA’s, Funders and LA’s about emerging issues and what’s going in the sector. VONNE are working on setting up an e bulletin for communication and sharing up to date contact info. A date has been set for Wed 14th June 201711.30- 2.30 for the LDA’s and Funders Network to come together again.
Tees Valley VCSEEconomic Growth & Inclusion Working Group
The groups has finalised its ‘ask and offer document and is looking to prepare an edited version via publisher to strengthen the message to the TVCA. JH will arrange to meet with Chair of TVCA& Sue Jeffrey & LDA’s are meeting with Andrew Lewis in Nov.
The group is holding a workshop to work through the latest version of the SEP and ensure we have responses which capture the VCSE contribution to each theme. Keith Wilson Economic Strategy & Intelligence Manager TVCA has offered to attend a group meeting to obtain our feedback.
Group membership continues to develop with targeting of VCSE members who demonstrate links to a broad range of orgs i.e. housing, industry etc.
North East Skills Sharing Group
VONNE is part of the North East Skills Sharing Group, established in 2015, bringing together key (not-for-profit) organisations that encourage cross-sector skills sharing (primarily between the private and voluntary sectors) in the region.
By ‘skills sharing’, we mean activity, undertaken on a voluntary basis that is offered by private (and, on occasion, public) sector organisations in support of charities, community groups, and their beneficiaries.
The group’s ultimate vision is “a coordinated skills-sharing infrastructure providing a pathway through the maze, regardless of: size of business, size of VCO, location, or type of skills sharing activity’
With funding from Community Foundation Tyne, Wear & Northumberland a website is being developed to support navigation of opportunities and links into brokerage organisations and LDA’s/volunteers centres etc. The group is also looking to raise the profile of skills sharing at various business network events
We are keen to have support business engagement in skills sharing in Tees Valley and potentially discuss this with you and explore the sectors needs at one of the forthcoming LDA meeting next year if the group want to discuss it?

Building Future Sustainability – A programme for the voluntary sector to bring in more money, from more sources, more regularly

About the programme
Developed by The Community Foundation in partnership with Mark Butcher Associates, the programme is designed to provide an introduction to a range of income generating activities and help organisations prepare to engage in them. As well as our trainers, attendees will hear from peer professionals who have succeeded in each area.
The programme helps delegates add value to their bid writing skills to get to the front of the queue but also explores the potential of closer working with the corporate sector, the wider community and rich individuals as well as how to develop ideas into income generating activities. How the programme works
The programme will build the capacity of ‘mid-range’ not for profit organisations across the North East to generate money for their work. To achieve this we’ll seek to:
- Provide a toolkit of technical fundraising skills
- nspire and lift the aspirations of delegates
- Encourage and support the organisations taking part to be more entrepreneurial, risk taking and visionary
- Explore different approaches that are required for trusts, companies, individuals and other key funders
- Be delivered by expert trainers and include guest slots from funders with a message to send or a story to tell
- Offer excellent networking opportunities
Who should attend?
The programme is aimed at not for profit organisations with a maximum turnover of £1,000,000 pa. Attendees should be Chief Executives, Managers, Project Officers, board members and others who have (or will have) an income generation function within the organisation.

Understanding and using Health Data –How to access and use Public Health England’s Tools and Resources

In this interactive session, you will be able to explore Public Health England’s (PHE) data tools and resources. The aim is to enable organisations to make better use of the data to improve knowledge about the health of the communities they serve and use the data as evidence within funding bids and in developing services and support.
In order to provide an opportunity for people across the region we are running two identical sessions, one will take place in a computer suite at Stockton Riverside College, and the second at Newcastle City Library.
Anna Christie Health Information Analyst from Public Health England North East will run through the following:
- Fingertips – This site hosts many of PHE’s profiles including the Public Health Outcomes Framework and Health Profiles setting out differences in life expectancy and healthy life expectancy between communities.
- Local Health – This tool provides health information displayed as interactive maps and reports at a very local area level.
You will be able to explore the data tools and resources on line and there will be the opportunities to ask questions.

Advent Sleepout – Durham Cathedral
Will you give up a night of comfort so that someone else won’t have to?
Communities across the North East join in solidarity with homeless people for one night at Durham Cathedral.
All funds raised will go directly to Nightstop North East and Cumbria. The project works across the entire North East region offering emergency accommodation to people who are facing a night on the streets, so far this year Nightstop has already offered more than 1000 nights of safe accommodation to some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our region. Nightstop is going into 2017 with financial uncertainty – there is a lot of money to be raised and we are hoping we can rely on your support to help us fill the gap so the project can continue to offer a safe alternative to those sleeping rough.

New Service – Drop in Chest X-ray
Launched in October – Drop In Chest X-Ray
Aimed at making it easier for people who have the signs and symptoms of lung problems to get the help and treatment they need early, new drop in sessions have been established for people who meet the following criteria:
- Aged over 50
- Current Smoker
- Have one or more of the following symptoms:
- Cough lasting for more than 3 weeks
- Chest pain lasting for more than 3 weeks
- Coughing up blood
- Not had a chest x-ray within the last 3 months
Providing a person meets this criteria they can just turn up to one of the sessions with no need for an appointment or a referral from a GP or healthcare professional.
The sessions are held at James Cook University Hospital and the One Life Centre at a variety of times over the week. See the attached poster for exact details.
