M&S Launch Surplus Food Distribution Scheme

M&S have launched the scheme to connect all of their stores with local charities and have been rolling out donations of chilled food since May 2017.

M&S have recently asked all of their stores to donate any surplus non-food items such as those that that may have damaged packaging but are still fit for purpose such as batteries, bags, plant pots, cleaning and laundry products, air fresheners, personal care items and pet food.

Interested charities should email food@neighbourly.com or register your interest on www.neighbourly.com

Local Businesses are asked to Complete a Survey about People who have Offended

Employers are being asked to share their thoughts about recruiting people who have previously committed crime.

The survey has been launched by Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner Barry Coppinger, Durham Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner Ron Hogg and local prison, probation and rehabilitation services.

Criminal justice agencies want to gain a greater understanding of employer’s attitudes to employing people who have previously offended and to find out how they may encourage them to consider it in the future.

Gaining employment plays a crucial role in preventing people from committing further crimes, however prisons report that just over 26% of prisoners enter employment on release.

FUNDING:

Children’s Health Fund Grants

“We believe that no child should go hungry, and we recognise that for some children during the school holidays there is a vital food provision gap that needs filling.

The Children’s Health Fund is inviting organisations that want to provide good food as part of holiday learning, play and activity programmes to apply for funding between £1,000 and £5,000. We expect funding applications at the higher end of our scale (£5,000) will be for projects looking to expand their work.

Please remember to click submit in the online system for your application to go forward for assessment. Deadline for submitting your online application is 5pm Friday 6th October 2017.

The Board will meet in November to decide which applications will receive funding. Awards will be announced in December.”

Tackling Inactivity and Economic Disadvantage Funding

Sport England released details on this new funding recently – there’s more info at https://www.sportengland.org/funding/tackling-inactivity-and-economic-disadvantage/

There is also a funding workshop to answer questions about this pot on the 27th September in Middlesbrough (detailed in the above).

They have two pots of funding available:

  • £2 million will support larger projects from £25,000 up to a maximum of £500,000. This will be to fund projects aimed at inactive people who are in employment. They will be ordinary people and families who sometimes, or often, struggle to make ends meet. They can find it hard to build physical activity into their lives, or feel being active isn’t for them.
  • £1 million will support projects between £25,000 and £100,000. This will focus on projects aimed at inactive people who are far less likely to have a steady income, or any income at all, and face more extreme disadvantage. They may also be facing other challenges, such as being at risk of offending or dealing with substance misuse.

They also say “We know that, sometimes, small amounts of money, especially for smaller local groups, can make a big difference, so five per cent of the total fund (£150,000) will be used to fund smaller awards between £1,000 and £10,000. This can be used to support either of the two groups of people described above.”

Grants of up to £10k available from Northern Gas Networks Community Promises Fund

They are particularly keen to see more applications from the North East as last time the region wasn’t as well represented as we’d hoped.

The programme, a partnership between Leeds Community Foundation and Northern Gas Networks seeks to support innovative projects working with vulnerable people to address fuel poverty and energy efficiency; carbon monoxide poisoning; engagement and employability in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics); and use of the Priority Services Register.

Northern Gas Networks delivers gas to 2.7 million homes and businesses in much of Yorkshire, the North East and Northern Cumbria and are launching this fund as part of their ongoing commitment to local communities.

The closing date for applications is 12noon on Thursday 19th October and applications must be submitted directly to the Leeds Community Foundation.
