Skills for People is a well-established charity serving NE of England, that supports disabled people to speak up and take control of their lives.

This is an exciting opportunity to join our successful Teesside team as a Project Worker, working with people who have a learning disability or are autistic. Our work champions the voices and rights of the people we work with and takes place in community venues, hospitals and other supported settings. The post is home based, working with a wide range of professionals from Skills for People, public and voluntary sectors.

We welcome applications from people who have experience of working in community settings with learning disabled or disenfranchised people, and who want to make a difference to their lives.

CONTACT is working with Tees Valley Clinical Commissioning Group to offer families living in Darlington, Middlesbrough or Redcar and Cleveland priority access to our FREE Telephone Support Service, Autism 1:1 calls and Workshops. We are able to support families of children with any type of neurodevelopmental conditions, including those on the pathway to diagnosis.

  • Understanding Sensory Processing – Thursday 4th November 2021, 10.00 am – 12.00pm. Click here to book. Learn more about sensory processing, reflect on your child’s sensory needs and identify new approaches to support you.
  • Wellbeing for Parent/Carers – Wednesday 10th November 2021, 10.00 am – 12.00pm. Click here to book. Understand what stress is and how it affects you. Learn about coping mechanisms and each other’s coping styles and identify new ways of coping with stress & reducing your stress levels.
  • Encouraging Positive Behaviour – Wednesday 24th November 2021, 10.00 am – 12.00pm. Click here to book. Understand why children behave the way they do and learn ways to handle difficult situations in a calm, stress-free manner, plus top tips to help.

If you are working with a family who are looking for individual advice, we offer 2 types of telephone support. These calls can cover any support or advice that families may need:

ASD 1:1 Telephone support calls with a trained advisor in Autism Spectrum Conditions.
Available for parent carers of children with Autism living in or accessing services in Darlington, Middlesbrough or Redcar & Cleveland

  • The advisor will provide support from both a parental and professional point of view.
  • The advisor will offer support in communication, behaviour and sleep.
  • These are available to book here and updated on a weekly basis.

For those families wanting more general support or advice.

1:1 Telephone Support

  • A telephone call-back appointment at a time to suit you with one of our experienced support advisors.
  • Available for parent carers of children with a neurodevelopmental need in the Tees Valley area (living in or accessing services in one of the following local authorities: Darlington, Middlesbrough or Redcar & Cleveland).
  • Offering support with sleep, behaviour, wellbeing, finances, understanding the diagnosis and transition.
  • Our family support advisors are parent/carers themselves and can offer both a parental and professional point of view.
  • The family support advisors will offer a space to be heard and listened to.
  • The family support advisors are very knowledgeable and can offer you advice and signposting to other local services to meet your needs.
  • These are available to book here and are updated regularly.

Feel Good – Covid-19 Recovery & Support Programme

The Health Improvement Team are working in partnership with You’ve Got This and Everyone Active to provide three Long COVID Peer support groups in Eston, Skelton and Dormanstown.

The three groups are facilitated by Everyone Active – Activators and Community Health Development Coordinators. The groups are free and for anyone who has had covid and or experiencing Long COVID symptoms which could include fatigue, shortness of breath, brain fog, chest pain/tightness and joint pains.

The groups are relaxed and informal, they are not clinical and you do not need a referral to take part. Contact details and group information are on each area specific poster attach. People can phone/email to book or they can turn up on the day. The Activators facilitate the physical activity element of the groups and the Community Health Development Coordinators signpost and assist individuals with their overall health and wellbeing. These are new groups and we want to co-design them with those attending therefore we expect the groups to change and develop over time.
