Context of Role

Standing on the site of the first ironstone mine in Cleveland, Land of Iron at Cleveland Ironstone Mining Museum – an independent museum celebrating the heritage of the ironstone mining industry – allows you to get up close and explore a rich and fascinating history.

Role Description

The Visitor Experience & Volunteer Manager will be responsible to the Chief Executive for Volunteers, particularly Guides and Front of House, with particular focus placed on the Visitor Experience and Volunteer Management and Strategy.

Purpose of the Role

General Duties

The role includes: front of house management, management of Guides and the Tours, volunteer strategy and management (support via Volunteer Coordinator), programming of schools and groups bookings (via Learning Manager), income generation and on site paid for activities and events (via Events Officer) and working with the wider museum team to develop the visitor experience. Some evening or weekend work will be required.

Visitor Experience

  • Champion the needs of their visitors on the management team.
  • Using audience insight and sector knowledge, ensure that their visits/tours are welcoming, accessible and engaging.
  • Working with the Events Officer and Retail Officer, support the development and maintenance of income lines such as retail and hire.
  • Ensure all work is carried out with relevant and robust risk management, compliance and sector standards.

Volunteer Management and Strategy

  • Develop and lead on volunteering strategies for the Trust, ensuring an inclusive and creative approach to how they attract, recruit and develop our volunteers.
  • With colleagues across the Trust build and maintain partnerships and seek grants for volunteering.
  • Ensure volunteer placements are meaningful and rewarding and that individual volunteers are supported for an experience which supports both museum operations and their individual health and wellbeing.
  • Lead on volunteer communications and develop opportunities to engage volunteers with key areas of our work.
  • Ensure all work is carried out with relevant and robust risk management, compliance and sector standards.
  • Be a key contact for all volunteers.
