Primary School Reading Volunteer – Schoolreaders

Context of Role

Schoolreaders is a national child literacy charity that recruits volunteers to go into local primary schools to listen to children read.

Schoolreaders goal is for all children, regardless of background, to leave primary school being able to read well so they can go on to access their secondary education fully and maximise their future life chances.

Role Description

Volunteers needed to listen to children read in North East schools!

If you can spare just an hour a week, you could change a child’s life story.

Volunteers need to be over 18, have good written and spoken English and enjoy spending time with children.

They do not need to have any specific skills or prior experience but will need to have a DBS check carried out, at no cost to themselves.

Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of 1 year, to ensure consistency for the schools and children involved, however holidays and appointments can of course be taken during this time.

Purpose of the Role

Volunteers visit their matched school once a week for an hour or two during the school day where they work individually with children to help improve their reading ability, their comprehension and also their enjoyment of reading.

Often Schoolreaders volunteers read with children who need extra support or who do not have anyone to read to outside of their classroom.

Benefits

As well as great feedback from schools, Schoolreaders receive regular feedback from their volunteers themselves, who often tell them that volunteering in school is the highlight of their week.

Volunteering can help to combat isolation and loneliness and improve mental health and wellbeing, so it is an excellent way to keep active and engaged.
