Virgin Money Foundation: North East Fund (Grant)
£10,000 – £50,000 (for one year, for running costs*). *Funds cannot be used to cover marketing costs, for example, to pay for advertising or promotional activity.
The new £1m round of the North East Fund is now open for applications that promote long-term, sustainable change in communities by:
- supporting vulnerable people into quality housing.
- getting young people into long term jobs.
- creating opportunities through social enterprise.
Charities, social enterprises, CICs, CIOs and IPSs are all eligible to apply. Non-charitable organisations and groups can apply as long as the work itself has charitable purposes and there is no private benefit to non-charitable interests.
Applicants will need to demonstrate that
- the organisation is strongly rooted in the local community.
- the work proposed is charitable and will make a real and measurable impact.
- they have systems in place to measure this impact and plans in place for when the money comes to an end.

Comic Relief – Core Strength Programme
The ‘Core Strength’ funding programme is now open with a deadline of midday on 27/07/2016.
Grants of up to £40,000 over 2 years are available to support organisation’s core running costs and capacity building.
In order to be eligible applicants must;
- Have a core focus (stated in their constitution) delivering services in one of our four the theme areas:
- Investing in children and young people to be ready for the future
- Empowering women and girls to be free to lead the lives they choose
- Improving the health and wellbeing of vulnerable and disadvantaged people
- Building stronger communities in areas of disadvantage, deprivation and poverty
- Have a track record of at least 5 years, be community embedded and committed for long-term.
- Have demonstrable regional or local significance e.g: providing the only service of its type in an area; providing exceptional quality services to highly disadvantaged people; possessing expertise and experience that would be a real loss to the sector if no longer available.
- Be working in the UK in areas of significant disadvantage, deprivation or poverty, including rural isolation.
- Have a turnover of between £100,000 -£500,000 (or average of last 2 years full accounts to take account of contract variations)
- Have a current plan and budget covering the period to at least 2017
- Have not more than a year’s unrestricted reserves (not including fixed assets).
- Meet the usual Comic Relief organisational eligibility criteria (a charity or an organisation with a constitution and asset lock delivering work that is charitable. Not statutory, no individuals).
- Current grantees can apply but must have less than 12 months funding left of their current grant.
- Funding is available for; Core running costs (heat, light, key non frontline staff, rent etc..), Time to work on strategic planning and policy (including business planning; fundraising strategies/income generation/policy/procedure reviews); Scope to improve structures and systems to improve efficiency and quality (including financial controls; human resources; management of volunteers; risk management; monitoring frameworks; impact assessment; accredited quality marks); Improving leadership and governance (including review of board/committee policy and practice; Trustee training; involving users; change management; develop new skills e.g. around social entrepreneurship). NB: This is not an exhaustive list.
- Funding cannot be used for; Service delivery, General infrastructure support or second tier organisations, Work that is primarily the responsibility of statutory bodies, Shortfalls in delivering a statutory contract or covering gaps in frontline staffing due to funding cuts, Work that primarily benefits one individual such as professional qualifications in accountancy or MBAs, Work that has already taken place, Repayment of debt, Redundancy costs, A general contribution to reserves, Large capital items or refurbishment or Employing consultants unless this is part of a clearly evidenced strategy linked to tangible relevant outcomes.

The Queens Award for Voluntary Service
Recognise the groups volunteering in your community!
Since Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee, the Queen has awarded this prestigious national honour to hundreds of volunteering groups across the UK. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer groups, recognises the outstanding contribution that volunteers make to their local communities.
If you know of a volunteer group that devotes its time to helping others in your local community and deserves recognition, nominate them for an award!
Please note that the deadline for submissions for the 2017 award is Friday 16th September 2016.
To be eligible, groups must have been running for at least 3 years and consist of a minimum of 2 people, the majority of whom must be volunteers. Full details of the criteria and details of the online application process can be found here.
Targeted Transport Scheme 2016
The targeted transport project provides funding for transport hire to allow ‘under-represented groups’ to access our beautiful National Park.
To qualify for free transport your groups needs to be:
- An ‘under-represented group’, which may include ethnic minorities, young people, those with disabilities and special needs, those without a car, etc.
- Be from within a socially deprived area in – Middlesbrough, Darlington, Redcar and Cleveland.
- Visits must be within the National Park Boundary.
- There must be enough passengers to fill at least 85% of the vehicle (minibus or coach).
- All visits must be booked and confirmed with the NPA a minimum of 3 weeks before the visit is due to take place.
- In order for the visit to come out of this year’s budget it must take place before the end of March 2017.
Any number can access it and is available until the end of March 2017 for visits anywhere in the National Park

New Funding Event coming to Redcar
BIG Lottery and Heritage Lottery Fund Seminar

Time: 10.30am-12noon
Todays climate provides a whole new challenge within the funding world and Redcar and Cleveland will benefit on 21st July with presentations from two of the largest funders in the country.
BIG Lottery will provide an up to date overview of their current funding programmes including Awards for All and Reaching Communities and will field questions from the audience.
Heritage Lottery Fund have targeted Redcar and Cleveland as a priority area, therefore are keen to see new exciting projects; they also have a variety of programmes open for bids right now and will provide essential insight into how they can be accessed.
This theatre style seminar will be held in the externally funded Tuned-In building right on Redcar seafront.
BIG Lottery and Heritage Lottery Fund in turn will provide a 45 minute presentation separated by a short break with refreshments available to purchase in the adjacent on site cafe. A Question and Answer session will be held at the end of both sessions.

EVA wins major award!!
EVA Women’s Aid wins Charity Bank Greatest Impact Award 2016!
EVA Women’s Aid supports women and children in Redcar and Cleveland who are or have been victims of domestic violence or sexual violence.
Charity Bank writes, “In June last year EVA Women’s Aid, based on Redcar’s High Street, opened the UK’s first safe house specifically for victims of domestic and sexual abuse aged over 45. This project was supported by a Charity Bank loan.
The initiative formed part of a unique project to support mature women suffering at the hands of their abusers, who are less likely to report maltreatment than younger victims. It also operates two safe houses in the Teesside area geared towards young women.”

30 Hours FREE Childcare for 3&4 yr olds
Andrea Laverick from Families Information Services (FIS) has a short survey asking about current childcare use and the number of parents who are likely to take up the offer of 30 hours FREE childcare, which will be introduced from September 2017.
